Disaster Management
Ongoing
tectonic activity in the Himalayan
region makes it inherently fragile and
is visited by a number of disasters;
earthquake, landslide, flash floods,
cloud burst, and forest fire. We can in
no way gain control over the fury of
nature and are destined to live under
the threat of the natural hazards.
Global experience however shows that
mitigative planning is the best remedy
for combating the threat of these
disasters. Thought handicapped to
control or predict these hazards
temporally we can restrict these from
taking die shape of a disaster.
Utilizing the state of art CIS and
satellite remote sensing technologies
GRASS has undertaken the challenge of
delineating the areas more prone to
(having high probability of occurrence)
landslide hazard. After identification
of the potential hazard, low cost
mitigative measures are being planned in
consultation with the experts and die
masses. The populations in the areas
likely to be affected by the fury of the
hazard are being sensitized regarding
the danger and this exercise has proved
successful in garnering their Mill
support for implementing mitigative
interventions. |
