Forestry
To
check the menace of forest fires which
destroy large tracts of forests
particularly in the Himalayas during the
dry summer season, GRASS has come out
with a unique and ambitious program to
utilize forest litter by making compost
and briquettes as fuel. The requisite
technology has been provided by the
organization. The program aimed at
preventing forest fires, utilization of
the forest litter in compost which in
turn would enhance the productivity of
the farm lands in the hills devoid of
any chemical fertilizers. This would
discourage rearing of large number of
cattle and forbid free grazing by the
hill people which are a great burden on
the meager forest resources. The
organization through its various field
units has been involved in the
exploration of plant based herbicides
and pesticides.
GRASS has
encouraged the use of multipurpose
plants and trees by the individuals and
village communities to fulfill the fuel
and fodder needs of the local
communities. This would lessen the
burden on the forests in the hills. Many
nurseries of such plants like Bhimal and
Ringal have been set up by the
individuals to cater to the needs of the
communities.
