Water
Power
This
activities of Grass seeks to conserve
and optimally use every available drop
of water. GRASS has been a pioneer in
the up gradation and renovation of
watermills commonly known as "Gharats" ?
for power generation and improving their
efficiency. More than two lakhs
watermills through out the entire
Himalayan region has been doing the
traditional job of grinding of grains.
Based on the same principle as that of
big dams, watermills using the
innumerable water bodies and streams
could be useful in the overall
development of the backward hilly region
through power generation . GRASS has
pioneered many technologies and has been
engaged in the Rudraprayg Himalayan
belts comprising all the hill states of
the country to upgrade and renovate the
watermills. The organization has also
organized the water millers in each
concerned state to empower the poor
water millers.
Gharat is central to multiple activities
that are catalytic to regional
development. The availability of water
in Gharat encourages activities that are
economically and environmentally viable
and help in employment generation.
